Last week was all about design in Milan, Italy. With creative vibes buzzing all over the city, new galleries, showrooms and art projects were opening everywhere. At ‘Salone di mobile’, with the lighting fair ‘Euroluce’, design brands presented their products to design professionals from all over the world. Evie and Gerrit Jan visited the fair ground and the creative district ‘Brera’ in two days, breathing inspiration every step of the way.

Trends in lighting

Earlier trends are being continued, as we have seen lots of matte brass and opal glass spheres. Portable table lights, small spotlights and even smaller led profiles are still very much popular in 2019. One of the new features is the use of fabric or nylon straps in lighting products. We noticed several light fixtures with suspension straps lined with a power cord or led strip, and even a fabric strap with the power feed invisibly ‘woven’ in.

Popular materials in lighting

Marble and natural stone are completely back in our interiors this year. Not only in furniture, but also in lighting. We have seen many luminaires with a marble base or shade, some shades beatifully translucent and spreading a soft light. We have seen marble in several types and colors, but also vulcanic rock and even a nice glass-like material made out of recycled solar panels.
